MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Shoppers in the south end of the Lighthouse Premium Outlet Mall in Michigan City were evacuated Thursday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m. after contractors reportedly struck a 3-inch natural gas line underground while digging, according to a NIPSCO Facebook post.

The incident occurred near the intersection of 8th and Manhattan Streets where contractors workers are currently working.

NIPSCO workers and firefighters from the Michigan City Fire Department responded to the area to assess the damages made to the underground pipe at which time they initiated the temporary evacuation.

Utility crews worked hard to stop the gas leak, however, are still working on repairing the damages.

when gas will be restored to residents.
