MICHIGAN CITY- Through Tuesday, August 7, many businesses, organizations, and churches will be collecting school supplies for students in need.
Items that are recommended for donation are pencils, black pens, spiral notebooks, 3-hole loose-leaf paper (especially college-ruled), washable markers, dry erase markers, glue sticks, erasers, pencil boxes, 2-pocket folders, facial tissues, Ziploc sandwich bags, antibacterial wipes, rulers, highlighters, composition notebooks, calculators, earbuds or headphones, and backpacks (new or gently used).
Currently the following places are accepting donations : Wal-Mart, Al’s Supermarket on Franklin St, Captain Ed’s Candy Island and Furniture Showroom, CLH CPAs and Consultants, Dunes Optical, First Trust Credit Union, Jazzercise, Life Care Center of Michigan City, Member’s Advantage Credit Union, St. John’s United Church, Michigan City City Hall, and the Michigan City Area Schools Administration building. Other businesses, organizations, and churches are also encouraged to join the supply drive. All donations can be dropped off at the Elston cafeteria on Tuesday, August 7 from 9 am until noon.
The City-Wide Back-to-School Rally is scheduled for Thursday, August 9 from 3-7pm at Elston’s Gil Field. The organizing committee for the Back-to-School Rally is comprised of the following companies and organizations: Indiana Black Expo, MDWise, HealthLinc, Anthem, American Licorice, the YMCA Elston branch, Sodexo, LaPorte County NAACP, and Michigan City Area Schools.
“Many families in our community are struggling to make ends meet,” stated Pat Harris, Chair of City-Wide Back-to-School Drive. “We hope that this drive will help assure that every student is prepared for school this fall.”
